RESEARCH TECHNICIAN
BASIC SUMMARY: Responsible for operations, support and animal care tasks in compliance with applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP, Association for Assessment and Accreditation of laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards and regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists in supporting surgical procedures, including surgical preparation, anesthesiology, pre and post-operative care, other routine animal care. Performs non sterile and sterile study specific surgical procedures. Experience with surgical equipment including anesthesiology, by-pass machines, and basic hemodynamics. Experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel and basic database programs. Performs routine observation and charting of physiological data and animal health status as required by GLP standards, perform accurate and timely record keeping consistent with the maintenance of all quality standards and client expectations. Performs client specific study data collection according to protocol. Operates, maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment in accordance with established quality control procedures. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Two-year degree in animal husbandry/biological sciences or equivalent.
Experience: One to three years experience in an animal laboratory environment desirable.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
Certification/Licensure: Certification in an approved Vet Tech program preferred. AALAS certification desired.
Other: Strong working knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures and GLP, AAALAC, USDA, and FDA standards and regulations. Previous experience in supporting surgical procedures and previous experience calibrating a variety of laboratory equipment. Basic working knowledge of animal care.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds with or without assistance from floor to cart (approximately 8” above floor). Routine required bending, stooping, twisting, sitting, standing, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly wears protective clothing (goggles, face shield, surgical mask, cap, gloves and scrubs). The employee regularly works with live animals with risk of exposure to allergens, zoonotic disease(s) and biohazards. The noise level in the work environment may require ear protection.
